About

Bertrand Smith's studies in human geography focuses his photography on people's movement within and presence upon the built and natural environments.

Favouring a 4x5 large format camera, Bertrand works exclusively in an analogue workflow, developing the film and plates himself and to print into traditional silver gelatin paper in his darkroom.

Thanks to his GIS training, his processes are scrutinized under an analytical eye, and has developed a unique form of cartographic printing onto locally sourced wood.

Continuing with the analogue trend, he delved into the world of leathermaking over COVID. In 2023 he moved from pursing a career in City Planning to turn to the trades and enter the world of metal working. Following a Foundational program in Sheet Metal and Fabrication, he started a career in HVAC ductwork as well as put together a small backyard forge.
